ABOUT THE GALLERY
Canadian born Peter Martin developed his first pictures at age 13 and became a professional at 16 when a photo was published on the front page of a Toronto daily newspaper. From that time, he has been both freelance and staff photographer for various newspapers, news outlets and publications throughout Canada and the US (Oakville Journal Record, Edmonton Sun, Montreal Gazette and the Washington Post) and published in international publications such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, Time, Newsweek, Sport’s Illustrated and McLean’s.
Over the last 45 years Martin has worked in over 30 countries accumulating well over 10,000 credited assignments. As one of Canada’s most respected photojournalists he has won significant critical recognition for his work including the National Newspaper Award for his photograph of Terry Fox and Recognition of Achievement Awards from both the Ontario News Photographers Association and the Alberta News Photographers Association. In 2008 his photograph of Terry Fox was voted #4 of the Top Ten Historical Photos That Changed Canada.
Since 2002 his work has been displayed in major solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibits in the UK, Canada and the US where he’s won awards with the Washington Gallery of Photography the Maryland Federation of Art. He was honoured with being chosen as a participant in both the Day In The Life Of Canada and Day In The Life of the N.H.L. book projects. He was also recently asked to be a judge at the NNA Awards (Canada's answer to the Pulitzer Prize)
His varied and diverse portfolio of work includes international sporting events, fashion shoots in Tahiti and Hong Kong…Formula One Racing in Montreal and Italy…Popes, Presidents and Royalty. In 1989 he covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Velvet Revolution in Prague.
In 2015 Peter Martin opened his own gallery in Stow-On-The-Wold, in the Cotswold's, one of the most beautiful areas of the UK and only 90min from London. The gallery features his work and is a base for lectures and seminars with invited speakers.
Peter Martin also teaches workshops helping to inspire other photographers to develop their own skills and build their own self-confidence in a modern world over saturated with imagery.
He currently divides his time between his gallery in Stow-On-The-Wold, Toronto, Montreal and Annapolis Maryland.
